Poetry Book Launch: Civilization Makes Me Lonely by Jennifer Nelson
7:30pm

celebrate the launch of Civilization Makes Me Lonely, Jennifer Nelson's second book of poems and winner of the 2016 Sawtooth Poetry Prize. Joining the celebration will be poets and writers Daniel Woody, Dan Magers, and Sara Wainscott, with feminist poet Christine Kanownik serving as emcee. Civilization Makes Me Lonely offers several forms of resistance, oriented both toward the present and toward deep history, in hopes of offering a feminist, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, and otherwise pro-difference and non-normative future. Christine Kanownik is the author of KING OF PAIN. Her poetry is can be found at FENCE, Diagram, and Jubilat, among others. Her chapbook We Are Now Beginning to Act Wildly was published in 2012. Dan Magers's first book of poems, Partyknife, was described by Thurston Moore "as if a poet-ghost [were] adrift thru dressing rooms backstage taking notes…. Writing poems like these is just as good as starting a band." Magers is the founder of the online poetry journal Sink Review and the handmade chapbook press Immaculate Disciples Press, which focuses on poetry book and artist collaborations. His newest chapbook, Spiritual Grave Year, is published by Reality Beach. He lives in Chicago. Sara Wainscott's work appears in DIAGRAM, The Journal Petra, Powder Keg, Fairy Tale Review, Dream Pop Journal, and elsewhere. Her chapbook of sevenlings is forthcoming from dancing girl press. She co-curates Wit Rabbit, an inter-genre reading series in Chicago, and was recently recognized along with co-curator Sarah Meltzer among the "LIT 50 2017. Daniel Woody lives in Chicago, where he teaches Composition and African-American literature at Loyola University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His poetry and prose can be found in The Volta, The Opiate, The Journal Petra, Word Riot, and BOAAT. In addition to Civilization Makes Me Lonely, Jennifer Nelson is the author of Aim at the Centaur Stealing Your Wife. An art historian working on an ethical yet global pedagogy of pre-modern cultures, she teaches in the department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her poems have recently appeared or are forthcoming in BathHouse, LIT, and Make: A Literary Magazine, among others.
