Genders and Sexualities in Chinese Digital Culture

Symposium is co-sponsored by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Chinese Students and Scholars Association, Department of Visual and Critical Studies, Department of Student Affairs, Department of International Affairs, and the Office of the Dean of Faculty.
Speaking will be two visiting Chinese cultural studies scholars: Ling Yang from Xiamen University, PRC, and Jing Jamie Zhao from the University of Warwick, UK. Also speaking will be SAIC Department of Photography alumna Kanthy Peng and SAIC VCS student Ellie Tse, as well as Maud Lavin, professor, VCS.
Topics include: international love stories in Hetalia; Chinese reception and fan rewritings of The L-Word; growing up in the SusuNaru fandom; and Mongkok fans of K-Pop.
The talks will be in English, and the discussion after the talks will be in Chinese and English, and will be followed by a reception in the Ballroom for all participants.
This event is in conjunction with the publication of the book Boys' Love, Cosplay, and Androgynous Idols: Queer Fan Cultures in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, co-edited by Maud Lavin, Ling Yang, and Jing Jamie Zhao; due out to the public from Hong Kong University Press in late Spring 2017.
