CHICAGO Windy City Media Group has released the first in a series of gay news applications for the iPhone. This first application is called Windy City Times.
The free app will include links to the weekly edition of Windy City Times, but also will include breaking news and entertainment items.
Developed by Martie Marro of LoveYourWebsite.com, the Windy City Times news app will be the first in a series of iPhone apps from Windy City Media Group.
"We know that our readers are continuously changing how they seek out news and information," said Windy City Times Publisher Tracy Baim, who co-founded the publication in 1986. "We are constantly evolving with these changes. We communicate our updates through Twitter, personal and business Facebook pages, and now through iPhone technology."
The ultimate goal of any new technology is to link readers back to the Web site www.windycitymediagroup.com, where readers can find hundreds of new photos and articles posted weekly. These include local features but also national and international news and entertainment from a team of several dozen writers and photographers around the world.
"As we are seeing the shrinking of all print media, including LGBT media, it is very important for traditional newspaper companies to reach out to readers where they are most comfortable seeing the news," Baim said. "If that's on Facebook, that's fine with us, as we then link to the coverage for those who want more details. And now, through the iPhone, we can reach people all over the world, and soon on other mobile devices."
Studies have shown that gays and lesbians are early adopters of new technologies, and that they also make up a high percentage of Apple consumers. Windy City Times is among the first gay publications in the country to release an iPhone app.
