Women from across the U.S. and even from Canada and Australia attended an Old Lesbians Organizing for Change (OLOC) regional gathering July 19-21 in St. Louis, Mo.
OLOC is a national network of lesbians over age 60 working to empower old lesbians and to work against ageism and oppression.
Mandy Carter, long-time activist in lesbian and civil-rights causes and now national coordinator of the Bayard Rustin 2013 Commemoration Project, was the keynote speaker and conducted a workshop on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
OLOC will will be participating in the anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C. in August.
Lesbian playwright Carolyn Gage also conducted a high-energy "lesbian tent revival" for participants.
Several Chicago women joined the group of about 50 in caucuses, "playshops", workshops on racism and classism, a Saturday night concert by the St. Louis Women's Chorus CHARIS and a dance with women from the St. Louis area.
OLOC leaders, including Jan Griseinger, Sally Tatnall, Ruth Debra, Alix Dobkin, Bonnie Wagner, Cheryl Larsen and Pat Cull organized the St. Louis gathering, along with administrator Susan Wiseheart, St. Louis OLOC chapter members, and with help from Sherrill Wayland, Elizabeth Fuchs and others from the St. Louis SAGE affiliate. Planning has begun for a 2014 gathering in Oakland, Calif.
