A recent report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) finds that Veterans Administration (VA) healthcare service to LGBTQs is hampered by a failure in reporting and analysis.
VA hospitals have LGBT veteran care coordinators doing educational outreach and encouraging veterans to self-identify. However, record keeping and analysis are hampered because no standardized field exits in the data collection system for sexual orientation.
The system was created during the period of time when military service by LGBTQ people was banned.
