2019-06-24

On June 24, Chicago authorities released a video of embattled actor Jussie Smollett wearing a noose on Jan. 29, the night when he was allegedly attacked—along with hundreds of other videos as well as hundreds of pages of texts, emails and internal documents, The Chicago Tribune reported.

Smollett, who is African-American and openly gay, reported that two men attacked him in downtown Chicago, slipping a noose around his neck and shouting racist and homophobic slurs. Smollett ended up being indicted on 16 counts of disorderly conduct alleging he paid $3,500 to two brothers ( Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo ) he knew to stage the attack; however, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's office later dropped all charges.

The whole episode has been costly for Smollett, who will not return to his role for the final season of Empire, co-creator Lee Daniels has confirmed.
