Megan Rapinoe scored on penalty kicks to give the United States a 2-1 win on June 24 over Spain to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup, ESPN.com noted.
Rapinoe made news in May by becoming the first out lesbian to pose for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Last year, Rapinoe and her girlfriend, WNBA basketball star Sue Bird, became the first same-sex couple to be featured on the cover of ESPN's Body Issue.
Rapinoe, a co-captain of the U.S. women's national soccer team, also has made news for not participating in the national anthem.
The win sets up a quarterfinal date for the United Staes with hosts France in Paris on June 28.
