For those who have been following awards season ( the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics Choice Awards and more ), the 91st Academy Award nominations, announced Jan. 22, did not surprise themfor the most part.
The Netflix black-and-white film Roma and The Favourite, a lesbian-centered period dramedy, tied for most nominations with 10 each. Black Panther made history as the first superhero movie to get an Oscar nod.
A Star Is Born received several nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor ( Bradley Cooper ), Best Actress ( Lady Gaga ), Best Actor in a Supporting Role ( Sam Elliott ) and Original Song ( "Shallow" ). However, Cooper was not nominated for best director, his slot seemingly filled by Pawel Pawlikowski, who filmed the black-and-white foreign movie Cold War.
The Best Picture nominees are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice.
In LGBT-related developments, Olivia Colman (Best Actress) as well as Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz (Best Actress in a Supporting Role) also received nominations. Also, Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) were nominated for best supporting actor in roles as gay men. Melissa McCarthy portrayed a lesbian author in Can You Forgive Me?, and received a best actress nod.
