Gwendolyn Brooks events in spring

The University of Chicago will celebrate the legacy of acclaimed poet Gwendolyn Brooks with events throughout the spring, including a major gathering of scholars, writers and musicians from April 6-8.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of her birth, Centennial Brooks will include a scholarly conference and a celebration of the life and poetry of the first African American poet to win the Pulitzer Prize. Presented by the University of Chicago in partnership with the DuSable Museum of African American History and the Poetry Foundation, it also will feature a special appearance by Nora Brooks Blakely, Gwendolyn Brooks' daughter.

Centennial Brooks is presented alongside Our Miss Brooks 100, a city-wide program for Chicagoans of all ages interested in Brooks' poetry and life.

Poetry Foundation celebrating Brooks

This April, the Poetry Foundation, 61 W. Superior St., will celebrate National Poetry Month with three events that commemorate the 100th birthday of the Chicago poet Gwendolyn Brooks.

There will be Young People's Poetry Day on Saturday, April 1, 10 a.m.-1 p.m; a Brooks conference with the foundation's partners at the University of Chicago on April 6-8; and a reading of Golden Shovel poems—homage poems that incorporate words from a Brooks poem—featuring Patricia Smith and Terrance Hayes, the creator of this poetic form. on Wed., April 12, at 7 p.m.
