Blue Moon Mystery Ball Oct. 23

Murder, intrigue, suspense and a generous dash of wicked thrills and chills are slated for Chicago Dramatists' first-ever Blue Moon Mystery Ball.

The event—which will also feature a fortune teller, blackjack and a silent auction of mystery excursions—is taking place the weekend before Halloween on Friday, Oct. 23, 6:30-9:30 p.m., at Cheney Mansion, 220 N. Euclid Ave., Oak Park.

Renee Fleming teams with Harris Theater

The Harris Theater for Music and Dance is collaborating with renowned soprano Renee Fleming on the new performance series "Renée Fleming: To the Edge," which the theater is producing in association with Lyric Unlimited.

The first performance of this series is the world premiere of "Higher: Renée Fleming and Patricia Barber Perform the Music of Patricia Barber" on Dec. 14.

Additionally, single tickets for all Harris Theater Presents and Beyond the Aria performances are on sale. The shows are divided into three categories: "See the Dance," "Hear the Music" and "Beyond the Aria."

Finalists named in screenplay contest

Five finalists and five semifinalists have been named in Pride Films and Plays' Great Gay Screenplay Contest, an international contest for screenplays with LGBT characters and themes.

The five finalists in the Great Gay Screenplay Contest are: Drowning City, by Chuck Griffith; Finndale, by Lloyd Ohls; The Gay Shoe Clerks, by Brad Cryan; A Place in the Woods, by Erik Gernard; and Somebody to Love, by Jay Cipriani.

The five semifinalists are: Home, by Marco Glinbizzi; Le Mecano, by Lukas Hassel; On the Road to Selma, by Steve Somers; SuperBob, by George Smart; and Tasting Home, by Judith Newton.

The five finalists' screenplays will be performed as enhanced staged readings Nov. 13-15, during Gay Film Weekend at Center on Halsted's Hoover-Leppen Theatre, 3656 N. Halsted St.

CHF's 'Four Women' Nov. 2 in Lincoln Park

The Chicago Humanities Festival's ( CHF's ) "Four Women: Josephine, Eartha, Nina, and Tina" will take place Monday, Nov. 2, 6 and 8:30 p.m. at Francis W. Parker School, 2233 N. Clark St.

Rob Lindley and Doug Peck—the team behind A Night at the Oscars and Birds Do It, Bees Do It...—are behind an evening exploring the lives and music of four iconic expatriates: Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, Nina Simone and Tina Turner.

This one-night-only event, with Lili-Anne Brown hosting, will feature CHF favorites as well as music and theater legends, including E. Faye Butler, Lynne Jordan, Dee Alexander, Bethany Thomas and more.
