Two filmmakers documenting the link between the Civil Rights movement and the LGBTQ Equal Rights struggle have turned to Kickstarter to raise funds to complete their film.
"All stories about human rights are stories about everyday people, so we want to give as many people as possible a chance to participate in this project," said Marilyn Bennett of Truth In Progress, the non-profit organization producing the film.
The documentary, entitled "From Selma to Stonewall: Are We There Yet?," follows Bennett, a 52-year-old white lesbian writer and activist and Rev. Gil Caldwell, an 80-year-old straight black retired preacher and civil rights leader, as they visit sites important to both movements and interview people along the way. The film looks at personal experiences, searches for common ground between the two movements, and asks probing questions about the role of religion and community in the equal-rights struggle.
Bennett and Caldwell, working with noted filmmaker Tonya Easbey, seek $20,000 for post-production costs to finish the film, which is almost entirely shot. They turned to Kickstarter to encourage people to participate in this important project with even small donations. All support is acknowledged in some fun way, Bennett said. Participants will receive thanks ranging from free copies of the film to digital downloads of original soundtrack music by jazz singer Eden Atwood, to special postcards from the film crew. Even $1 will get you a synchronized, louder than loud personalized "Thank you!" shouted into outer space at the time of your choosing.
"We want to make it fun for people to participate at any level," Bennett said.
