This is the second year the Gittings Scholarship teams up with GLSEN to present a privately funded $1000 cash Scholarship which goes to a young activist who's advanced LGBT equality and visibility in the local high schools. This year's award ceremony will be May 18 at William Jones High School, 606 S. State St. Chicago from 7-10 p.m.
The award is in honor of Barbara Gittings, one of the pioneers whose many groundbreaking accomplishments include picketing for LGBT rights in the nation's capital years before Stonewall; editing the groundbreaking lesbian magazine The Ladder; being one of the first lesbian activists to 'go public' on TV and radio using her real name; and spearheading the movement to get homosexuality removed from the official list of mental illnesses.
If you'd like to attend the event or make a cash or product donation to the event please contact Toni Armstrong Jr. at toniajr@earthlink.net . All donations are tax deductible. If you'd like to know how to apply for a scholarship visit www.GLSENChicago.org and click on the May 18 event.
