Wisconsin state Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa, D-8th, came out as a bisexual July 24, according to the Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.
Zamarripa, 36, represents Milwaukee. She is the only Latina in the state legislature.
She told reporter Georgia Pabst: "It has always been my goal in office to be transparent and honest with my constituents. But before the primary in 2010, I didn't have the valor and courage to come out. I feel remiss that I didn't come out then."
Zamarripa said she wants to help others who are struggling with their identity. She also said it was more difficult to be out as a bisexual: ""It's tough for people to wrap their minds around that, but it is a reality and the truth," she said.
She has a primary opponent Aug. 14.
