Luis Vega, 27, beat out 15 contestants in three rounds of competition June 14 at Circuit in the first Windy City Gay Idol contest, by Windy City Media Group Group (publishers of Windy City Times and En La Vida). Vega is a dance instructor in Kelvyn Park and a popular singer on the Creaoke karaoke circuit. Amazon, 30, lead singer for Pulsation band, came in a close second, followed by Shaun Sperling, 24.
The hotly contested event packed more than 500 people into the club to vote for finalists from seven GLBT clubs (Star Gaze, Buddies', Bobby Love's, Spin, Charlie's, Madrigal's, Jackhammer). Thanks to our title sponsor, Bud Light, and co-sponsors W Hotels, American Airlines, Materville Studios (what fantastic sounds and video clips!) and Creaoke (who did such a fantastic job on the karaoke the entire contest).
Our 16 finalists, in order that they sang: Jason Hackner, 30; Debbie Matt, 43; Darren Kilbury, 33; Shaun David Sperling, 24; Bev Spangler, 40; Susana Rosado, 32; Amazon, 30; Luis Vega, 27; Dj (Deej) Halicky, 35; David Scarpaci, 24; Stephanie Brewer, 30; Timothy A. Parricio, 28; T.T. (who sang a terrific original a capella we can't wait to hear recorded); Alma Mendoza, 43; Monica E. DelCastillo, 30 (who sang two original numbers—both which should be radio hits); Richard Streetman, 26. The top seven were Monica, Shaun, Richard, Susana (Suzi), Amazon, David and Luis.
