Women and Children First hosted three poets who performed original work July 7.
The event not only drew folks to the bookstore but also fostered a space for art, poetry and expression.
t'ai freedom ford read several poems from her new book How To Get Over, which has stories about her personal reflections, family and childhood. Ford is a high school English teacher and winner of The Feminist Wire's inaugural poetry contest. She has gone on a tour twice as part of a queer women of color literary salon called The Revival.
She was accompanied by Avery R. Young, an award-winning teaching artist who performed his own spoken-word pieces on discrimination, race and other themes. Young mentors youths in creative writing and theater.
Ciara Darnise Miller also read a few original poems from her book Silver Bullet, which comments on early 20th-century race films. Miller has published countless poems and academic essays, and currently teaches poetry and drama to students throughout Chicago.
