Sondheim to receive Sandberg Award
The Chicago Public Library Foundation and the Chicago Public Library have announced that the 16th annual Carl Sandburg Literary Award will be presented to legendary composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim.
Heralded for his immense contributions to musical theater in a career spanning more than 50 years, Sondheim will be honored at the Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner Wed., Oct. 21, at The Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Rd., on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Also being honored is Eric Charles May, who will receive the 21st Century Award, which salutes emerging authors with ties to Chicago.
One of the highlights of the annual benefit is that each guest has the opportunity to get to know an esteemed author with ties to Chicago personally. This year, guests will engage in table conversation with one of more than 70 notable authors, including chef Rick Bayless, Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod, "Mr. Fix-It" Lou Manfredini, Chicago cabaret performers Beckie Menzie and Tom Michael, artist/educator Nick Cave and attorney/writer Scott Turow.
Play to mark 10th anniv. of Katrina
The Raven Theatre, 6157 N. Clark St., will observe the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with The Play About My Dad.
The Play About My Dad, by Boo Killebrew, opened at New York's 595 E 59 Theatres in June 2011. It tells of the author's fathera doctor in Gulfport, Mississippiwho stayed behind to take care of patients as the storm hit in August 2005.
Previews will be Wed, Oct. 21-Sunday, Oct. 25, with press openings Monday, Oct. 26 and Tuesday, Oct. 27. The regular run will be Oct. 30-Nov. 28.
