Oklahoma City— After 22 years on the Oklahoma City Police Department preceded by a tour in Desert Storm in the U.S. Army, MSgt. Paula Sophia retired April 8 in order to run for House District 88 on the Democratic ticket.
State and municipal laws prohibit active police officers to run for state office, therefore Sophia had to retire in order to pursue a third career, still serving the public.
"I've been passionate throughout my entire career in law enforcement about helping people in their day to day lives", Sophia stated, "Being a beat cop has allowed me to really get to know the citizens of our great city on a personal level."
Her experience in public safety has given Sophia the knowledge on how to improve officer's interaction with the public, rather than accepting the status quo.
"We need to make some fundamental changes to improve how officers interact with the public and how the public perceives officers," Paula said, "Right now we have just enough officers to respond to calls and not much else. We need a system where they can get out of their cars and interact with members of the community, that is the only way we can get proactive instead of constantly just being reactive."
Despite her law enforcement experience Sophia's interests span far beyond that of public safety and into education, preserving the middle class and just listening to the concerns of the community.
"I can't wait to get out in the district, knock doors and listen to the concerns and needs of the voters", stated Paula. "This district has a history of leaders that represent the interests of the district and I'm humbled by the opportunity to follow in their footsteps and continue their great work."
Sophia will face several opponents in the June 24 primary which will be followed by the general election on November 4.
