Scot's Easter bonnet contest has been, for me in the last 10 years or so, the official ushering in of spring. And when I saw the winning entry enter the room, seasons changed. His headpiece was so wide, folks had to back up against the wall as he walked by. Gay men and their unrepentant pageantry ...
In keeping with my diet ( why yes, I HAVE lost weight, how sweet of you to notice ), I had to politely decline David's offer to make me an official judge at Trident Windy City's cupcake wars at Touche. I just sampled a few of the sweets, each baked ( and frosted and sprinkled [makes Homer Simpson drooling noise] ) by members of a variety of local organizations, including IL Gay Rodeo Assn., MAFIA, ONYX and more. Well, I couldn't be rude and not sample ALL the cupcakes. Maybe I sampled some more than once. I guess I should've just been a judge, huh? I proceeded to go without dinner.
Good to see the girls ( and the girls' girls ) at Shakers for Angelique's Ladies Who Rock drag show. Monique's dripping-in-diamonds eleganza and Sassy's creative use of props made this show one to remember. And good to see my friend Jessica Smedick behind the bar. Is there anywhere you DON'T work, Jessica?
The good people of the Proud to Run organization pulled off another smashing success with this year's Proud to Runway event at Sidetrack. And by pulled off, I mean both in sheer accomplishment in furthering education on their cause and in pulling clothes off the sexy models on stage. Always good to see Collin in various states of undress. And William, with his neon yellow shoes and squirrelly energy, made the show for me. For more on the Proud to Run organization, see www.proudtorun.org . This year, they start the race Sat., June 27.
While at the event I got a chance to chat with AIDS Legal Council of Chicago's Kevin Mork about their upcoming May Ball benefit, Sat., May 2. It's the first of its kind for the organization and promises a few surprises, including the announcement of their new name. I'll be on hand to find out myself.
See you at Jackhammer's 15th anniversary, Fri., April 24. I may not remember having seen you, but I will see you.
