TPAN program for HIV prevention in serodiscordant couples

Chicago, Illinois, August 16, 2012—TPAN (Test Positive Aware Network) today received a $10,000 grant from The Gibbs Family Foundation in support of our innovative and new HIV Prevention Initiative for serodiscordant couples (Serodiscordant couples are those individuals in a relationship in which one partner is HIV-positive and the other HIV-negative). This prevention initiative is available to all populations impacted by HIV/AIDS in the greater Chicago Metropolitan Area. The psycho-educational program will be comprised of six weekly groups for five couples, approximately 2.5 hours per session, three cycles per year.
Among both heterosexuals and men who have sex with men (MSM), sexual transmission of HIV occurs most frequently in the context of intimate relationships, a fact that underscores the need for couple-based HIV prevention. A licensed therapist will facilitate discussions and informational sessions relating to HIV education, communication, sexual intimacy, trust, self-advocacy and harm reduction.
"Serodiscordant couples are often overlooked in the planning and delivery of HIV related services. We are excited to initiate this program with the support from The Gibbs Family Foundation" said Julie Supple, Director of Client Services for TPAN.
