Xavier Jugelethe 37-year-old police officer murdered in the April 20 Islamic State attack on Paris' Champs-Elyseeswas openly gay and an advocate for LGBTQ rights.
Police fatally shot the gunman, identified as Karim Cheurfi.
The New York Times reported that Jugele was among the authorities who responded to a terrorist attack at the Bataclan concert hall in November 2015, and he attended the reopening a year later.
Mickael Bucheron, president of the French pro-LGBT organization Flag, said of Jugele, "He was a simple man who loved his job, and he was really committed to the LGBT cause."
French President Francois Hollande has said that Jugelewho had served on the Parisian police force since 2010will receive an official tribute.
Jugele leaves behind a partner.
