The Theatre School, DePaul University, Chicago Playworks for Families and oung Audiences presents The Wrestling Season by Laurie Brooks, directed by John Jenkins.
Brooks uses the metaphor of a wrestling match to explore the issues of peer pressure, the search for identity and the destructive power of rumors. It is Matt's year to excel on his high school wrestling team, but innuendo about his friendship with Luke causes Matt to question himself and his priorities. The play focuses on ideas and issues that teens face every day.
In reflecting these issues, the language is sometimes candid. Due to mature themes, this play is recommended for age 13 and up. Post-show discussions with the cast follow each performance.
Following its theatrical run, this play will be performed at selected schools and other locations on a schedule to be determined.
The run is Feb. 2-7, each night at 7:30 p.m., Athenaeum Studio Three, 2936 N. Southport Ave., Chicago. Admission is free.
Call (312) 922-1999. The play is presented in partnership with the YWCA Loop Women's Services, a rape crisis center, which will provide the production with a prevention educator to train the actors how to facilitate conversations about sexual assault and prevention. In addition, they will facilitate the post-show discussions following each performance.
