Transgender filmmaker and Chicago native Lana Wachowski announced Aug. 20 that she would be directing a fourth Matrix film, according to Variety.
Wachowski directed the three previous films in the seriesThe Matrix ( 1999 ), The Matrix Reloaded ( 2002 ) and The Matrix Revolutions ( 2003 )alongside her sister Lilly, who won't be joining Lana in the director's chair this time around. Stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are slated to return for the new sequel. Reeves has enjoyed box office success this past summer with a starring role in John Wick 3 and a voice role in Toy Story 4.
The Wachowskis were long headquartered in a studio in Ravenswood for their pre-production and post-production duties. They placed that space up for sale late last year when their new projects temporarily dried up.
Twentieth anniversary screenings of the first Matrix film are scheduled in theaters across the country at the end of August.
