State Rep. Nick Sauer ( R-Libertyville ) resigned Aug. 1 after allegations broke that he'd posted intimate photos of his ex-girlfriend, Kate Kelly, on a fake Instagram account, where he additionally engaged in sexually-tinged banter with other men.
The allegations were first reported by Politico Aug. 1. According to that report, Sauer would direct message other men pretending to be Kelly. The couple broke up last March, and Kelly notified Chicago police when she became aware of Sauer's activities. An investigation is reportedly pending.
Sauer was running for a second term in office and was a member of the state's tollway board and the House's Sexual Discrimination and Harassment Task Force.
In his resignation, Sauer wrote, "My ability to fulfill my obligations as a State Representative and public servant will be affected by the distraction of addressing these allegations."
Sauer succeeded state Rep. Ed Sullivan Jr., the second Republican House member to back marriage equality.
