Sam Kerr has informed the Chicago Red Stars she will not return to the team for the upcoming 2020 National Women's Soccer League ( NWSL ) season in order to pursue a playing opportunity in Europe.
Kerr, 26, joined the Red Stars via trade in January 2018. In two seasons with Chicago, the forward totaled 34 goals and nine assists. Kerr won consecutive Golden Boots while a member of the Red Stars and was the recipient of the 2019 NWSL MVP awardbecoming the first player in Red Stars history to win the award.
"We wish Sam nothing but the best," Red Stars Head Coach Rory Dames said in a press release. "She is an incredible person on and off the field and we will continue to support her from Chicago."
