Quinn unspecific on marriage support
by Kate Sosin, Windy City Times
2012-02-22

Gov. Pat Quinn's views on marriage equality remain unclear after questioning from media outlets, including Windy City Times.

The governor has come under scrutiny in recent days after the Associated Press reported that Quinn was unsure of his support for a recently filed marriage equality bill in the Illinois General Assembly. Quinn signed the civil unions act into law and has been outspoken about his support for LGBT rights.

Quinn defended his record on LGBT rights in an interview with WBEZ but would not specifically state whether or not he supported same-sex marriage in Illinois.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has come out in favor of marriage equality in Illinois.

At the Equality Illinois gala on Feb. 11 Quinn reconfirmed his commitment to the LGBT movement in a brief address to attendees.

"We're going to make the will of the people the law of the land," Quinn said.

Brooke Anderson, a spokesperson for Quinn, said that the governor has championed LGBT rights in the past and that he supports equality, but she also stopped short of addressing Quinn's support for same-sex marriage in Illinois.

"The governor believes in equal rights for all people," said Anderson in a statement to Windy City Times. "He fought for and helped deliver civil unions last year, which have been utilized by couples in 90 of Illinois' 102 counties. As the governor noted earlier this week, we're looking forward to a full legislative debate."
