Poll Says 70% of Americans Oppose Trump-Pence Transgender Military Ban
2019-01-30

WASHINGTON — Today, the American Military Partner Association ( AMPA ), the nation's largest organization of LGBTQ military families, responded to a new Quinnipiac University National Poll showing that an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose Donald Trump's attempts to implement a transgender military ban. The poll found that, "American voters say 70 - 22 percent that transgender people should be allowed to serve in the military."

"It's crystal clear that the far majority of Americans reject Donald Trump's reckless, discriminatory attack on our nation's brave transgender service members," said AMPA President Ashley Broadway-Mack. "Instead of singling out transgender troops for discrimination, Donald Trump should reverse course and honor them for the heroes they are. Transgender service members have proven time and again that what matters is their ability to accomplish the mission — not their gender identity."

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court denied petitions from the U.S. Department of Justice ( DOJ ) asking that the Court review preliminary federal district court rulings that have kept the Trump administration from implementing its discriminatory plan to prevent transgender people from serving openly in the U.S. Armed Services. However, in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court granted the DOJ's request for a stay on the preliminary rulings, allowing the administration to begin moving forward in implementing its transgender military ban.

The American Military Partner Association is an organizational plaintiff, along with the Human Rights Campaign and Gender Justice League, in a lawsuit brought by Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN and joined by the State of Washington challenging the constitutionality of the proposed ban. The American Military Partner Association ( AMPA ) is the nation's largest organization of LGBTQ military spouses, their families, and allies. A non-profit organization with more than 50,000 members and supporters, AMPA is committed to education, advocacy, and support for "modern military families."
