Pianist creates music for Langston Hughes poems

Local pianist/composer Stuart Mindeman is releasing In Your Waking Eyes, a CD that features musical settings of 11 Langston Hughes poems.
Jazz, soul music, West African and Caribbean musical styles as well as the stories of the poems themselves serve as inspirations for the album.
On the CD, Mindeman plays Wurlitzer electric piano, organ, clavinet and piano. Featured musicians are Sarah Marie Young, vocals; Quentin Coaxum, trumpet; Kyle Asche, guitar; Chris Siebold, guitar and steel guitar; Bryan Doherty, bass; Makaya McCraven, drums; and Juan Daniel Pastor, percussion.
There will be CD-release parties Wed., March 19, at ETA Creative Arts, 7558 S. South Chicago Ave., at 7 p.m. ( $10; www.CharlesHeatherPresents.com ); and Thursday, April 10, at Constellation, 3111 N. Western Ave. ( $8; www.Constellation-Chicago.com ). |
