Illinois Unites for Marriage hosted a screening of the award-winning documentary The New Black Oct. 8 at the Chicago Urban League.
The documentary discusses the complexities that many African Americans face growing up as a member of the LGBT community and how they interact with faith leaders and family members.
Moderator of the post-film discussion was Tim'm West. Panelists were the film's producer Yvonne Welbon; Kim Hunt, executive director of Affinity; William McNary, co-director of Citizen Action Illinois; and Bishop Carlton Pearson of New Dimensions Chicago.
Brenda Lee and S. Lee Edwards spoke at the start of an event about their own relationship and desire for marriage equality.
State Rep. Ken Dunkin and Illinois Unites Field Director Keron Blair also joined the discussion.
