Actress Emma Stone and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane announced the Academy Award nominations Jan. 10.
There are nine nominees for Best Picture: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty. Out playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America) wrote Lincoln.
Hugh Jackman is a Best Actor nominee for Les Miserables, along with Bradley Cooper for "Playbook," Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln, Joaquin Phoenix for The Master and Denzel Washington for Flight. The Best Actress race is especially intriguing, with Jessica Chastain for "Zero," Jennifer Lawrence for "Playbook" and Naomi Watts for The Impossiblealong with the youngest and oldest nominees ever: Quvenzhane Wallis for "Beasts" and Emmanuelle Riva for Amour, respectively.
Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) and Sally Field (Lincoln) are among those nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Lincoln leads the pack with 12 nominations.
In the Feature Documentary category, the AIDS documentary How to Survive a Plague is a nominee. In the Animated Feature category, a nom went to ParaNorman, which out co-creator Chris Butler directed and which features a lead gay charactera first for an animated film.
According to Advocate.com, among the snubs were Ben Affleck, Tom Hooper and Kathryn Bigelow, who were not nominated for directing, respectively, Argo, Les Miserables and Zero Dark Thirty.
The Oscar telecast, which MacFarlane is hosting, will air on Feb. 24 on ABC at 8:30 p.m. ET.
