Open Door invites you to observe National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day on Friday, September 18, 2015. Throughout this day, we focus on the difficulties that come along with being HIV positive in the aging community. At Open Door 39% of our clients are age over the age of 45.
Although much advancement has been made, there continues to be a strong need for research, data and medical understanding of the aging process and how it is affected by HIV/AIDS. At Open Door, we strive to close the gap by working with our patients to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle, including taking control of their HIV.
For the general population, it is important to note that persons over the age of 45 may not have the knowledge about HIV/AIDS or may not perceive themselves at risk and are then less likely to protect themselves. HIV/AIDS rates among persons 45 years and older are significantly higher within minority communities due to discrimination or stigma that can lead to later testing.
It is important to get tested regularly, regardless of age. Early diagnosis is crucial in combating complications that may arise from HIV and it's progression into AIDS. It is never too late to get tested and learn how to protect yourself. Know your status and take control of your health.
Open Door has been providing sexual health and wellness in the greater Fox Valley for more than 38 years. With health centers located in Elgin and Aurora, Open Door provides testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, and provides primary care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
