The Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association is sponsoring scholarships for graduating high school students who have shown service, activism and an understanding of the LGBTQ community, and continuing education students who are planning to work with the LGBTQ community and its issues.
The application Deadline is April 1, 2014.
OPALGA announces a new scholarship program designed to provide financial support for the continuing education of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning students; children of LGBT parents; or allies of the LGBTQ community.
The 2014 scholarship amounts are $2,000 and are paid directly to the post-secondary education institution. All types of post-secondary education can be supported by these scholarships, including community colleges and trade schools.
Two types of scholarships are being offered. The first is for graduating high school students who have shown service, activism, and an understanding of the LGBT community. The second is for continuing education students ( for advanced degrees ) who are planning to work with the LGBT community and its issues.
Scholarships for graduating high school students are open to graduates of local area high schools: Oak Park River Forest High School, Proviso East, Proviso Math & Science, Morton East & West High Schools, Elmwood Park High School, Steinmetz Academic Centre, Fenwick High School, or Trinity High School. Scholarships to support advanced degrees are for students who plan on attending or are currently enrolled in any institution of high education. Since its inception in 1989, the Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association has become one of the largest community based, multipurpose LGBTQ membership organizations in Illinois. OPALGA produces and sponsors vast array of regular events and activities aimed at increasing awareness of LGBTQ issues, political action and advocacy, and social networking.
