In New Hampshire, state Representative-Elect Stacie Laughton—who made history as the nation's first transgender elected official—is stepping down after news of her criminal record became public, according to the Huffington Post.

Laughton decided to leave office after it was revealed that she had served four months in Belknap County House of Corrections following a 2008 credit card fraud conviction.

She will formally resign through a letter sent to the secretary of state's office. If Laughton had not resigned, she would have not been able to take office for six more years.
