Local Pakistani Muslim lesbian actor Fawzia Mirza stars in a movie, called Signature Move, that won the Grand Jury Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature Film in this year's Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival, according to AfterEllen.
Mirza's relationship with her girlfriend while living in Chicago was her inspiration behind writing the script for the film: "She is now my ex, but don't worry; we're still friends."
Outfest took place July 6-16. There were more than 150 feature and short films, as well as six venues; 40,000 people attended Outfest, making it the largest film festival of any kind in Los Angeles, according to the event's website.
A few of the other winners of audience and/or Grand Jury awards included Chavela, a documentary about chanteuse and sexual outlaw Chavela Vargas; Bayard & Me, about civil-rights activist Bayard Rustin and the partner he adopted, Walter Naegle; A Million Happy Nows, a drama about a veteran soap-opera star ( with early-onset Alzheimer's disease ) who retires to a beach house with her publicist and partner; and 195 Lewis, a dramedy series about queer Black women.
