Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed legislation July 8 that will save the liquor license for Big Chicks and authorize the issuance of a license to Tweet, its companion restaurant. The bill was drafted and sponsored by Rep. Larry McKeon—it changes Illinois Liquor Law .
McKeon, other elected officials and community leaders have been struggling since the first of the year to help Big Chicks and its owner Michelle Fire stay in the Uptown area on Chicago's North Side. The city moved to close Big Chicks and refused to issue a liquor license to Tweet because they are located under 100 feet from a religious institution. The little-known prohibition has never been a problem for Big Chicks before.
Public Act 93-0688 amends the Liquor Control Act to allow that a liquor license may be issued or renewed if 'the primary entrance of the liquor establishment and the primary entrance of a place of worship are located at least 100 feet apart, on parallel streets, and separated by an alley, and the principal religious leader of the place of worship does not indicate opposition to the license.' In the case of Big Chicks and Tweet, the primary entrances are well over 1,500 feet apart.
'This Sheridan Road tavern has been a popular neighborhood gathering place since the 1940s,' said Gov. Blagojevich. 'Since 1986, Michelle Fire has done an outstanding job of making it a place where residents of the eclectic and diverse Uptown community can feel comfortable and accepted.' |
