Jim Watson—the longtime mayor of Ottawa, the capital of Canada—came out as gay in a column in the Ottawa Citizen, writing that the announcement was "better late than never," according to CNN.com .

He wrote he had long struggled with the decision to be open about his sexuality, and considered whether the revelation would affect his relationships with family, friends and constituents.

Watson's announcement came just a day before the start of Ottawa's Capital Pride 2019.

Watson was re-elected mayor for a third consecutive term on Oct. 22, 2018, with more than 71 percent of the popular vote, according to his official website. First elected as a councillor in 1991, he was re-elected in 1994. In 1997, he was elected as the youngest mayor in Ottawa's history with 82 percent of the popular vote; after leaving the post in 2000 ( to become president/CEO of the Canadian Tourism Commission ), he was re-elected in 2010.
