2016-03-23

ConsumerAffairs.com analyzed data from the Census Bureau and Gallup to create an interactive map that shows the movement of different demographic groups over the past decade. It looks at groups such as millennials, retirees, families with kids, single/married people and the LGBT community.

Readable and interactive version at the link: www.consumeraffairs.com/movers/ .

With LGBT, highlights included:

—Of the 20 cities that saw a positive change in their ranking, 11 were in traditionally red states, including Virginia, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas; and

—Traditionally LGBT-friendly cities like Minneapolis, San Diego and New York saw a drop in their national rankings in terms of populations.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, roughly 3 percent of Americans identify as something other than "straight."

This map shows the change in national ranking from two different surveys. Sources: U.S. Census and 2012-2014 Gallup Daily tracking. It doesn't say why select cities are shown, however, using the curser on the ConsumerAffairs.com version of this map reveals demographic info.
