Marie Newman, first-time candidate for U.S. Congress in the 3rd Congressional District of Illinois, will be hosting a fundraiser at Sidetrack Thursday, Dec. 7, 5:30 pm. This event will help her continue to oppose Rep. Dan Lipinski, the anti-LGBT incumbent. Newman welcomes all members of Chicago's LGBT+ community and their allies to stop by and say hello, ask questions and show their support.
Lipinski was one of the few Democrats to support a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union of "one man and one woman" and voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which aimed to ban discrimination against LGBT+ employees. In contrast, Newman has a trans daughter and developed an anti-bullying non-profit. She is a strong supporter of marriage equality, vows to support ENDA, and will not stand for employers discriminating against the LGBT+ community under the guise of "religious liberty."
The campaign states: "It is extremely difficult to run against an incumbent, especially a deeply entrenched and Machine-backed one who inherited his congressional seat from his father ( Bill Lipinski ). Newman's indefatigable community outreach and fundraising efforts have so far raised about $330,000 for her campaign, but she foresees that she will need around $1.1 million in total to remain competitive. Lipinski so far has raised about $1.3 million."
The event is open to all. Tickets can be purchased online: tinyurl.com/MNFCSidetrack . Contact Matt at firstname.lastname@example.org or JoAnn at email@example.com . More information on Marie can be found at www.marienewmanforcongress.com .
