Washington, DC- LPAC, the country's only lesbian political action committee, today announced its endorsement of Marie Newman for U.S. Congress, Illinois District 3.
"Marie Newman's true progressive values make her a clear choice in this race," said Ana Cruz, Board Member of LPAC. "Newman is in a race against an anti-choice, anti-LGBT, anti-immigrant opponent in the primary and it's time District 3 has a progressive Democrat who values and represents a diverse constituency and an inclusive legislative agenda," concluded Cruz.
"Marie Newman is on target on every progressive issue LPAC cares about — she is exactly the kind of candidate we need in 2018 and will provide much-needed progressive leadership in Congress," said Urvashi Vaid, Interim Executive Director of LPAC. "Core issues from gun control to health care and civil rights will be front and center in the new Congress and it is time to get the country back on track," concluded Vaid.
About Marie Newman
Newman founded a nonprofit group to address the issue of school bullying after one of her children was severely bullied. She expanded that nonprofit nationwide and eventually became the Managing Director of "Team Up to Stop Bullying," a coalition of 70 nonprofits dedicated to anti-bullying solutions. In this capacity, she has worked directly with state and federal legislators to implement anti-bullying policies.
Newman has been endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign, Feminist Majority, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, EMILY's List, NARAL Pro- Choice America, MoveOn.org, Democracy for America, Hispanic American Labor Council, National Nurses United, Gloria Steinem, American Women's Party, Off the Sidelines, Reclaim Chicago, Illinois Federation of Teachers, US Congressman Luis Gutierrez, US Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, US Congressman Ro Khanna, and other organizations.
Her opponent, Dan Lipinski, has a record of anti-choice, anti-LGBT, and anti-immigrant positions.
Like many running in this critical midterm election year and part of a surge of women running for office for the first time, Newman has never served in elected office. Her top priorities are working families and rebuilding the middle class, healthcare for all, and protecting and advancing the civil rights of women, LGBTQ communities and people of color. She also supports the following issues: affordable, quality healthcare, preserving the ACA including requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, supports passing Medicare for All, affordable childcare, protecting Planned Parenthood funding, fighting for climate change policies and supports common sense gun safety laws, among other issues.
