Lake County is set to become the first area in Illinois to raise the minimum age to buy cigarettes, tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to 21.
The ordinance, however, only affects unincorporated regions. It will take effect Jan. 1.
Mark Pfister, executive director of the Lake County Health Department, said the ordinance's goal, among other things, is to reduce the number of people who start smoking before the age of 21. The nonprofit organization Tobacco 21 has said that approximately 90 percent of smokers nationally started smoking by that age.
