The National Latina/o Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organization ( LLEGO ) strongly opposes the Bush administration's filing of a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of a lawsuit challenging a University of Michigan affirmative action program. LLEGO also opposes the president's nomination of the controversial Charles W. Pickering Sr. to a federal appellate judgeship. 'Within a period of just 10 days, President Bush has twice taken actions that could render harm to the quest for justice and equality for minorities in America,' said MartÃn Ornelas-Quintero, LLEGO executive director. 'We are outraged by what the president has done. And coming on the heels of the Trent Lott controversy, the president's decisions will only further racial divisiveness in this country.' The Bush administration filed a friend-of-the-court brief siding with white students who have sued the University of Michigan over affirmative action and race-based admissions policies at the school.
The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a bipartisan coalition of 40 Latina/o groups including LLEGO, released a statement criticizing the Bush administration's stand on the affirmative action casethe NHLA referred to U.S. census figures showing that the percentage of non-Hispanic whites with a bachelor's degree or higher is more than double the percentage of Hispanics. |
