According to bystanders, an individual, seemingly a transgender woman, attempted suicide at the pier on Osterman Beach, 5600 N. Lake Shore Dr., the evening of July 17.
Chicago Police reported that a 22-year-old man jumped in the water and was pulled out at around 7:22 p.m. But a reports from a bystander suggest that the individual might have been misgendered in the report.
That witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said that they and others saw the individual, who appeared to be female, acting erratically and heading for the pier in the shallow water shortly before 7 p.m.
The person appeared "as if she was having a mental break down or really freaking out, and she was yelling that, 'I just want to get to the pierI just want to be through with all this,'" the witness said.
The witness notified lifeguards but maintains they were slow to act. Another bystander phoned 911 on their cell phone, by which time the individual had jumped off the pier and began swimming away from the beach, still yelling that she wanted to kill herself. Two lifeguards did eventually assist the person in keeping their head above water, the witness said.
The individual was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital for evaluation, according to Chicago police.
