An LGBT-friendly housing complex planned for Logan Square is one step closer to breaking ground.
Curbed Chicago reported, on June 21, that Chicago Housing Authority ( CHA ) has approved plans for the John Pennycuff Memorial Apartments at Castillo Plaza, which is slated to be built at 2031 N. Milwaukee Avenue. The complex is currently expected to have 41 affordable apartments and 47 CHA residences.
The project is named after LGBT- and housing-rights activist Robert Castillo and his late husband, John Pennycuff. In May, Raymond Valadez, chief of staff for Ald. Proco Joe Moreno ( 1st ), told Windy City Times that stakeholders hope to have a final presentation ready for the Chicago City Council by the end of the summer, and construction permits in hand by late-2017 or early-2018.
The project will be financed through funds from the Milwaukee-Fullerton TIF district, as well as CHA funds, tax credits and private funding. The Chicago City Council approved $16 million in borrowing for the apartment in December 2016.
