Dear Ald. Cappleman,
I hope this note finds both you and your partner in good health.
In the past we have had our differences, but I never doubted your personal commitment to social justice to the poor of our community. People of goodwill can have differences of opinion and approach, but they can also work together.
Some of the personal attacks you have received around the issue of homelessness in the Uptown area, in my opinion, have been inexcusable ugly. Like all working on the issue of homelessness, there should be a framework of fraternal good will.
It is one thing to be respectful in one's criticism of a politician; however, ad hominem trashing is total out of bounds when it comes to respectful dialogue. As a person of faith, I cannot remain silent when I see such behavior play out in the printed word.
The public bitterness directed at you over this matter is both unjust and unwarranted and runs counter to the gospel. One must always stand up to bullies and their cyber-militias.
You, your partner and your home are in my thoughts and prayers.
