The Indiana Chamber of Commerce, on Nov. 5, called on the state's General Assembly to add protections for LGBT citizens to it civil-rights laws, the ( Northwest Indiana ) Times reported.
The powerful business group said protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity to be added to the state's existing anti-discrimination statutes.
"The time has come for Indiana to expand protections against potential discrimination," said President Kevin Brinegar. "After the negative perception of our state generated by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in the spring, we need to get this right in order to secure the reputation of Indiana as a hospitable and welcoming place."
Numerous business leaders objected in March when the General Assembly and Gov. Mike Pence passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allows individuals and companies to use their exercise of religion as a legal defense. Many believed that the law imperiled the state's competitiveness in attracting workers and businesses.
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce includes more than 100 businesses.
