Illinois trans woman freed from prison
2019-07-10

Strawberry Hampton—a transgender woman who was transferred to multiple Illinois men's prisons after making abuse allegations against inmates and guards—is now free after the public campaigned for her release, WBEZ.org reported.

Hampton was supposed to be released from an Illinois prison last February; however, she said officers retaliated against her for reporting the alleged abuse by revoking good time ( typically, one-quarter of the sentence ). She was released because the Illinois Department of Corrections recommended restoring Hampton's good time, and the Illinois Prisoner Review Board approved the request.

Windy City Times reported that, in May, activists called upon Gov. J.B. Pritzker to grant Hampton clemency.
