Illinois conservative and former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh announced Aug. 25 to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on ABC's This Week that he's launching a Republican presidential primary challenge against President Donald Trump, ABC News reported.
"I'm running because he's unfit. Somebody needs to step up and there needs to be an alternative. The country is sick of this guy's tantrumhe's a child," Walsh said of Trump.
After Stephanopoulos pointed out Walsh's history of controversial statements, including racist slurs, the new candidate ( who once fervently supported Trump ) said, "I helped create Trump, and George, that's not an easy thing to say."
Despite Walsh's conservative credentials, he once claimed, in 1996, to be progressive on LGBT and related issues, Windy City Times reported. After that, however, he voted against LGBT interests many times, earning a zero rating from the Human Rights Campaign.
