The Washington Post magazine Oct. 5 included an essay by Ingrid Duran, President and CEO, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute: 'The Marine Corps was a way out of Kansas, and it was money for college. It was there where I got my leadership skills and the work ethic that I have now. I also came to terms with my sexuality in the Marine Corps. People are shocked when I say that I was a Marine. ... And then they're even more shocked when they find out that I'm gay. You know, so I'm very much your nontraditional leader. And it's okay. It's perfectly okay. So far, it hasn't been an issue. Maybe it's just the environment I'm in. In the political environment, it would be a huge mistake for it not to be okay. And, in the Marine Corps, at the time, they didn't have 'don't ask, don't tell.' So we just didn't talk about it.' |
