It has been more than a year since Chicago's LGBT library was open to patrons, but that will change Sunday, June 30.
Gerber/Hart Library and Archives has announced that it will unlock doors following the Annual Pride Parade for an open house.
"There is still work to do and we have obstacles to overcome and even though we're not officially ready to open, we can't wait another minute to show off where we are at and what we've accomplished!" the organization wrote in an e-blast to followers.
Gerber/Hart has been shuttered since last spring when the library moved from its old home in Edgewater to an unfinished space in Rogers Park. The moved prompted public questions and accusations that the organization had shut out community participation. Its re-opening date has been repeatedly pushed back while construction is completed.
Brad Tucker, Gerber/Hart board president, said that the library is holding off on opening while volunteers are trained.
"It's going to be three weeks at least before we have open hours," said Tucker. "We definitely wanted people to see it."
The library continues to look for volunteers, Tucker said. More information is available at Gerberhart.org .
The open house will be June 30 at Gerber/Hart, 6500 N. Clark from 4:30-7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
