Gerber/Hart Library, 1127 W. Granville, will hold an opening reception for its retrospective exhibition of the cartoons of the late Daniel Sotomayor, 'Unrelentingly Drawn: The Editorial Cartoons of Danny Sotomayor' on April 29 at 7 p.m. Sotomayor, an artist and AIDS activist, died of AIDS on Feb. 5, 1992.
Sotomayor was the country's first openly gay editorial cartoonist. His cartoons debuted in Chicago in January 1989, and were nationally syndicated until 1991. Sotomayor critiqued AIDS, local and national politics, religion, pop culture and controversial issues of the day. The exhibition will also include some of Sotomayor's non-editorial artwork.
The special guest at the opening reception will be Ferd Eggan. Eggan was a founding member of ACT-UP Chicago who planned and participated in many direct actions designed to influence both public and corporate policies regarding AIDS. Other speakers will be Wil Brant, curator of the exhibition; Lori Cannon, community activist and long-time friend of Sotomayor; and historian John D'Emilio.
