Veterans, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy Featured at Nation's only Municipal Salute to LGBT Veterans

Veterans from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities will be honored at the City of Chicago's 10th annual Salute to LGBT Veterans on Monday, June 25.

The nation's only municipally sponsored, military salute to LGBT veterans, "With Liberty and Justice for All," will take place from 12 noon to 1 pm. at the Richard J. Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington St.

Sgt. Jose Zuniga, USA, medic in Operation Desert Strom and Desert Shield and 1993 Soldier of the Year will be featured.

"With the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, members of the LGBT community are no longer forced to deny who they are in order to serve our country," said Mona Noriega, Commissioner of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations. "Despite this progress, it is still important to recognize the many contributions of veterans who are also members of LGBT communities and who served under different and challenging circumstances."

The program will include a presentation of colors, a Mayoral proclamation, and a wreath laying ceremony.

"With Liberty and Justice for All" is a presentation of the CCHR Advisory Council on Veterans Affairs and the Chicago chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights.
